For my students and others who are interested in how I go about starting a painting I am posting some images of the process. If you have been in my classes you'll likely notice that I set up a unit of measurement first, figuring out how many of these I need to be able to fit both vertically and horizontally across my canvas by looking through a proportional view finder. Placement of all other elements is determined by their proximity to the unit of measurement. This first segment often takes several hours to set up since I'm determining where it will be in my final composition. Once in place, it provides a framework that enables me to figure out the rest of the drawing, to correct errors by going back and re-measuring against my initial segment, and to accurately fit my composition on my canvas.
