For my students and others who are interested in how I go about starting a painting I am posting some images of the process.  If you have been in my classes you'll likely notice that I set up a unit of measurement first, figuring out how many of these I need to be able to fit both vertically and horizontally across my canvas by looking through a proportional viewfinder. Placement of all other elements is determined by their proximity to the unit of measurement. This first segment often takes a while to set up since I'm determining where it will be in my final composition. Once in place, it provides a framework that enables me to figure out the rest of the drawing, to correct errors by going back and re-measuring against my initial segment, and to accurately fit my composition on my canvas. Subjects with less built structures tend to develop a bit more based on the quickly changing light. Click here to see a landscape painting underway.
